What is Computer Forensics?

Computer forensics is the science of recovering and examining electronic data.  We are a nation that processes and stores more than 90% of our information in electronic format on computers, cell phones, MP3 players, etc.  We bank and transfer money electronically, write e-mails instead of letters, send text messages from cell phones, shop online and the list goes on. It is estimated that the worldwide Internet population is 349 million.

All this information leaves an “imprint” that can remain for years and can still be recovered by a computer forensics examiner. The forensic examiner can recover hidden files, deleted data, file access timelines, passwords, data transfers, Instant Messaging (IM) and Chat logs, system files, temporary files, Internet activity, history files, application log files, password-protected data and many other kinds of files not readily accessible to the untrained user.

The data recovered by a computer forensics examiner can be useful in some of the following ways:

  • Regaining Access to Lost Passwords
  • Discovering Hidden Bank Accounts for Divorce Cases
  • Ensuring Your Child is Safe on the Internet
  • Exposing Leaks in Your Company
  • Locating Drug Dealers, Gangs/Gang Members, Killers
  • Prosecuting Criminals
  • Revealing Employees Accessing Non-Work-Related Web Sites while “On The Clock”
  • Stopping Disgruntled Employees Who are Sabotaging Your Company
  • Uncovering CyberStalkers

Use your imagination….almost everyone today has a cell phone and/or personal computer along with countless other electronic devices that hold information including passwords, credit card numbers, personal financial information and other kinds of sensitive data.  A computer forensic specialist can extract this information and more.
